For the past couple of months I've been working on the perfect elephant amigurumi pattern. This is what I finally came up with:
I AM SO EXCITED THAT I DID IT!! Actually I think his legs are a bit long, I might shorten them a bit, but otherwise I am very proud of my lil elephanttttt
My process (hope you like pictures of elephants!):
My first little guy. I followed a pattern completely on him.
Then, using this pattern as inspiration, I made my own little changes to make this one.
I changed even more things for this one. He holds a special place in my heart... I love his little round body... This was far enough from the original pattern that I haven't been able to recreate it because I didn't write down how I made it.
From now on I have been trying to create the blue elephant, disregarding my pattern that I first used. Unfortunately I haven't had this best of luck...
This one turned into a mouse.
This one turned into a jellyfish.
At a certain point I decided to switch yarns. At the beginning I used Knitpicks Wool of the Andes Fingering Yarn, which was very nice but also tiny and time-consuming. For amigurumi I have started using Lily Sugar n Cream, which is thicker and cotton and suits the animals. At least, what I think. They're all stuffed with cotton balls. The bigger ones have safety eyes from Joann FAbric; the smaller onese just have bead eyes. (Can I just say that safety eyes are awesome????)
Anyways. With this elephant I was getting closer, but he turned out a little bit too small. Also, his trunk is weird, it makes him look more like an anteater!! He used to have safety eyes too. But they were too big for him, and so I pulled them out... it was so creepy... then I stabbed his empty eye sockets with pins so that he could have tiny eyes. I'm sorry he had to go through all that, poor little guy.
I essentially made everything about one or two stitches bigger to get the handsome fellow pictured at the top. It was worth all the effort!
Sometimes the failed elephants couldn't even turn into new animals. In those cases, they simply became cat toys for Libby!! Kind of weird peanut/snowman shaped toys but you know. Work with what you got. With a little bit of catnip she loves them!
So keep an eye out for more elephants! My plans are to
a) sell them on etsy/to friends
b) embellish them into little characters or people
c) develop a final pattern and sell that online for a few dollars.
